Our final 'song of the week' is dedicated to the note. The note in question is one written by the person singing the song"By The Time I Get To Pheonix". Written by composer Jimmy Webb and made famous by Glen Campbell, it reached #3 on the U.S.Pop charts in 1967.
The song consists of a man describing his decision to leave his female partner, by writing her a note telling her, and his descriptions of what he expects she will be experiencing as he arrives at certain locations.
By the time I get to Phoenix she'll be rising She'll find the note I left hangin' on her door She'll laugh when she reads the part that says I'm leavin' 'Cause I've left that girl so many times before
By the time I make Albuquerque she'll be working She'll prob'ly stop at lunch and give me a call But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringin' Off the wall that's all
By the time I make Oklahoma she'll be sleepin' She'll turn softly and call my name out loud And she'll cry just to think I'd really leave her Tho' time and time I try to tell her so She just didn't know I would really go.
This week's first Song of the Week dedicated to genres not touched in our class is I've Got To Get A Message To You.. Written by Barry Gibb and performed by Barry and his brothers Maurice and Robin in their group the Bee Gees in 1968.
The song is a plea from a man condemned to die in the electric chair, to the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife
The preacher talked to me and he smiled, Said, come and walk with me, come and walk one more mile. Now for once in your life you’re alone, But you ain’t got a dime, there’s no time for the phone.
I've just got to get a message to you, hold on, hold one. One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.
I told him I’m in no hurry, But if I broke her heart, wont you tell her I’m sorry, And for once in my life I’m alone, And I’ve got to let her know just in time before I go.
I've just go to get a message ….
Well I laughed but that didn’t hurt, And its only her love that keeps me wearing this dirt, Now I’m crying but deep down inside, Well I did it to him, now its my turn to die.
